At CustomPictureFrames.com, canvas stretching is part of how we make your canvas print. You upload your photo or artwork, we print it on archival canvas, and we stretch it by hand over solid wood stretcher bars so it arrives taut, square, and ready to hang. You can leave it gallery-wrapped or add a floater frame for a finished edge. We print and stretch your image to your exact size and ship nationwide in 3-5 business days. If you are local to Central New Jersey, you can also bring a canvas you have already printed or painted to our Somerset shop to be stretched and framed in person.

Two Ways to Get a Stretched Canvas

Order online, we print and ship

Upload your image in the canvas designer above, pick your size, and choose gallery wrap or a floater frame. We print on archival canvas, hand-stretch it on solid wood bars, install the hanging hardware, and ship it ready to hang in 3-5 business days. This is the right path when you are working from a digital file, photo, or scan and want the whole job done in one place.

How We Stretch Your Canvas

Canvas stretching at CustomPictureFrames.com starts with printing for mail orders. We print your uploaded image on archival poly-cotton canvas using archival pigment printers, then move the printed canvas to the stretching bench. Pigment prints render smoother gradients and deeper shadow detail than dye-based consumer systems, and they are rated for long-lasting fade resistance under normal indoor display.

From there, the printed canvas is hand-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher bar frame. The bars are kiln-dried before assembly so they stay straight and the canvas stays taut and square over time. Corners are folded clean, the canvas is secured to the back of the bars, and hanging hardware is installed. The piece is inspected for tension, alignment, and surface finish before it is packed and shipped.

By mail this is a print-then-stretch service, so we do not take in mailed-in physical canvases. If you already have a printed or painted canvas and you are local, bring it to our Somerset shop and we will stretch and frame it for you on the bench. If you have a digital file or a scan, upload it in the canvas designer above and we handle printing and stretching together.

Stretched Canvas Prints From Your Image

Any digital image you have the rights to print can become a stretched canvas. Common files we receive: phone photos, DSLR camera files, digital art and illustration, AI-generated images, and scans of original paintings, watercolors, and works on paper. The canvas designer previews how the print will look at the size you pick so you can see the crop and proportion before ordering.

For a sharp result, the image should hold about 150 PPI at the print size. A 24 by 36 inch stretched canvas, for example, prints best from a file around 3,600 by 5,400 pixels. Phone photos taken on modern cameras handle this for most living-room sizes when you use the original file from your camera roll rather than a copy sent through messaging or social apps.

Gallery Wrap or Floater Frame

A stretched canvas can ship in one of two finished looks. A gallery wrap continues the printed image around the edges of the stretcher bars so the side of the canvas reads as part of the artwork. This is the right look when the image has room around the subject for the side wrap, and when you want the canvas to hang without any framing.

A floater frame sits around the outside of the stretched canvas with a small reveal between the canvas edge and the inner frame wall. The result is a clean, modern finish that frames the work without covering any of the printed surface. Floater frames are the standard upgrade most photographers and artists choose for delivery to clients and galleries.

Canvas Sizes and Depths

Stretched canvas prints are made to your exact size with no fixed stock sizes. Common sizes most customers order include 16 by 20, 20 by 30, 24 by 36, and 30 by 40 inches, but you can enter any dimensions that match your image and your wall. Large and oversized stretched canvases are a regular order and ship with reinforced stretcher bars to prevent flex over time.

Two stretcher depths are available. Standard 0.75 inch bars give a slim profile that suits a floater frame or a flat wall display. Deeper 1.5 inch gallery bars sit further off the wall, give the canvas a more sculptural presence on its own, and are the more common pick for unframed gallery-wrap pieces. Both depths take the same finish options, and you choose the depth in the canvas designer at order time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you stretch a canvas I already have, or only ones you print?

Both, depending on how you reach us. By mail we print and stretch your image as a single service, so we do not take in mailed-in physical canvases. Locally it works differently: if you can come to our Somerset, New Jersey shop, you can bring a canvas you have already had printed or painted yourself and we will stretch it on solid wood bars and frame it for you in person. If you have a digital file, photo, or scan, upload it in the canvas designer and we will print it on archival canvas and stretch it before shipping.

What are the canvases stretched on?

Every print is hand-stretched over a solid wood stretcher bar frame. Stretcher bars are kiln-dried for dimensional stability so the canvas stays taut and square over time. You choose between standard 0.75 inch depth and deeper 1.5 inch gallery depth in the canvas designer.

Is the canvas ready to hang when it arrives?

Yes. Every stretched canvas print ships with hanging hardware installed on the back so it is ready to go straight from the box onto a nail or hook. No assembly is required, and no separate frame or backing has to be added before hanging.

Can I add a frame to a stretched canvas?

Yes. Stretched canvas prints can ship gallery-wrapped only, or finished in a floater frame that sits around the outside of the canvas with a clean reveal between the canvas edge and the inner frame wall. Floater frames are available in black, white, natural wood, walnut, and gold.

What sizes can a stretched canvas print be?

Stretched canvas prints are made to your exact size with no fixed stock-size limits. Common sizes run from 16 by 20 through 30 by 40 inches, and larger pieces are available on a custom basis. Enter your dimensions in the canvas designer to see pricing for the size you need.

How long does a stretched canvas print take to ship?

Standard stretched canvas print orders ship in 3-5 business days. Large pieces follow the same window in most cases. We ship nationwide, and tracking information goes out by email when the order leaves the shop. Local customers can choose pickup at our Somerset shop instead of shipping.
