Shadow Box Definition and Common Uses
A regular picture frame is shallow. It is made to hold flat things: photos, prints, posters, certificates. The artwork sits right under the acrylic.
A shadow box is deep. The deep space inside lets you display three-dimensional objects without crushing them. Most shadow boxes are 1 inch to 3 inches deep. Items get pinned, glued, or mounted to the back panel, then sealed behind acrylic on the front.
The other difference is how the inside is built. A picture frame uses a mat board to space artwork from the acrylic. A shadow box uses spacers, foam blocks, and small mounts to hold your objects in place and keep them off the acrylic.
How Deep Should a Shadow Box Be?
Pick the depth based on the thickest object you want to display. Measure your item at its widest point, then add at least 1/4 inch of breathing room.
- 1 inch deep, patches, medals, ribbons, dried flowers, trading cards, fishing flies, ticket stubs.
- 1.5 inches deep, military challenge coins, small jewelry, baby shoes, wedding garters.
- 2 inches deep, hockey pucks, folded flags, bulky pins.
- 3 inches deep, baseballs, small trophies, wedding bouquets, military caps, large 3D items.
If you are not sure, go one size deeper. You can fill empty space with fabric or foam; you cannot make a shallow box deeper after it's built.

- The interior space. The deep cavity where your items sit. Sometimes lined with linen or velvet fabric for a finished look.
- The back panel. Where your items get mounted with pins, foam blocks, or archival adhesive.
Choosing Your Acrylic
Framer's grade acrylic is the right pick for most shadow boxes. It is clear, lighter than glass, and shatter-resistant.
For keepsakes with colors you want to preserve, like jerseys, wedding dresses, baby keepsakes, and military uniforms, pair acid-free matting and archival mounting and hang the box out of direct sunlight.
Acrylic is lighter than glass and will not shatter, which makes it the safer choice for big shadow boxes or homes with kids and pets.
