Precision Framing for Latch Hook, Punch Needle, and Rug Hooking

Punch Needle Frames & Latch Hook Frames

Custom punch needle frames, latch hook frames, and rug hooking frames for finished pieces

Latch hook rugs and punch needle pieces are built stitch by stitch. Framing them properly means accounting for the thickness of the pile, the weight of the backing, and the texture you spent weeks creating. Design your frame below with the right depth, matting, and glazing for textile art.

Textile Art We Work With

From latch hook rugs to punch needle wall art

Latch Hook Rugs

Hooked pile rugs and wall hangings made with pre-cut yarn on mesh canvas. The thick pile (approximately 1.25 inches) requires a frame with adequate depth.

Punch Needle Art

Looped embroidery created with a punch needle tool on monk's cloth or linen. Punch needle pieces range from flat loops to sculpted textures depending on the technique.

Rug Hooking

Traditional hooked rugs made by pulling loops of fabric or yarn through a woven backing. Similar framing needs to latch hook but often uses wider strips for a chunkier texture.

Framing Tips for Latch Hook Art

Prepare the Edges

Trim the unworked canvas or backing fabric to 1.5 to 2 inches beyond the stitched area on all sides. This margin folds behind the mounting board. If the edges are fraying, apply a thin line of fabric glue or fray check along the raw edge.

Mount on Rigid Backing

Stretch the piece taut over acid-free foam core or conservation mounting board. Fold the excess canvas over the edges and secure it with stainless steel pins or acid-free linen tape. Pull evenly from opposite sides to keep the stitching square and avoid distortion.

Choose Appropriate Depth

Latch hook rugs have a pile height of approximately 1.25 inches. Standard picture frames may not provide enough clearance between the pile and the glazing. Use our frame designer, which offers frame profiles with sufficient depth, or select a shadow box frame for thicker pieces.

Glazing Considerations

For flat punch needle work, standard or non-glare acrylic works well. For latch hook with significant pile height, consider framing without glazing (backing only) so the texture remains uncompressed. Our designer lets you select "No Acrylic, with Backing" for this option.

Standard Latch Hook Dimensions

Measure the finished stitched area (not the total canvas with unworked borders) and enter those dimensions in the designer above.

Project TypeCommon Finished Sizes
Small punch needle (coasters, ornaments)4 x 4 in to 8 x 8 in
Medium punch needle (wall art, pillows)10 x 10 in to 18 x 18 in
Standard latch hook kit12 x 12 in, 15 x 20 in, 20 x 27 in
Large latch hook rug24 x 36 in, 27 x 40 in

Any size works. Enter your exact dimensions in the frame designer.

Common Questions

Can I frame a latch hook rug with the pile exposed (no glass)?

Yes. Select "No Acrylic, with Backing" in the glazing options. The frame holds the piece securely with the pile visible and touchable. This is the most common choice for thick latch hook pieces.

Will the weight of a latch hook rug damage the frame?

Our frames are built with professional hanging hardware rated for the weight. For large or heavy pieces, we include D-ring hangers and wire rated for up to 50 pounds. The mounting board distributes the weight evenly across the frame.

Should I block my punch needle piece before framing?

Blocking (dampening and pinning flat to dry) is recommended for punch needle pieces that have curled or distorted during stitching. Pin the piece face-down on a blocking board, mist lightly, and let it dry completely before mounting.

What mat color works best with textile art?

Neutral tones (white, off-white, light gray) work for most pieces. If your textile art has a dominant color, choose a mat that complements rather than matches it. Our designer shows 46 mat colors in real-time preview so you can test combinations before ordering.

What is the best latch hook frame or punch needle frame for a finished textile piece?

The best latch hook frame or punch needle frame is a solid wood shadow box with a 1.5 to 2-inch interior depth that clears the pile without crushing it. A 12x12 punch needle frame fits most wall pieces. A 15x20 latch hook frame fits a standard kit. A 24x36 latch hook frame fits a large hooked rug. Each one uses archival foam mounting and D-ring hardware.

What size rug hooking frame should I order for a finished hooked rug?

Measure only the finished stitched area of your hooked rug and order a rug hooking frame with a shadow box profile that matches those dimensions plus your preferred mat border. A small rug hooking frame (14x14 to 18x18) suits chair pads, while a 24x36 rug hooking frame holds a full traditional hooked rug with the chunky loop texture intact.
