Common Paint by Number Dimensions

Most paint by number kits use standard art canvas sizes. Select yours below to jump directly to the frame designer with your dimensions pre-loaded.

Every Canvas Size

Standard kit sizes from 8x10 to 24x36 inches, plus any custom dimension. Enter your canvas measurements and we cut the frame to fit.

Custom frame shop quality mat board

Single or double acid-free mat borders in 46 colors. A mat border refines the finished painting and creates visual separation from the frame edge.

Ready to Hang

Frame, acrylic, backing board, and professional hanging hardware all included. Your frame arrives fully assembled.

Framing Your Finished Paint by Number

Step 1. Let It Dry Completely

Allow your finished painting to dry for at least 48 hours before framing. Oil-based paints in some kits take longer. Touch the surface gently; if any paint transfers to your finger, wait another day.

Step 2. Decide: Stretch or Flat Mount

Paint by number canvases come in two forms. Pre-stretched canvases on wooden stretcher bars can go directly into a frame. Rolled or unstretched canvases need to be either stretched onto bars first or flat-mounted to a rigid backing board with acid-free adhesive.

Step 3. Choose Your Frame Style

For traditional-style paintings (landscapes, portraits, still life), wider profiles in gold, walnut, or dark wood complement the artwork. For modern or abstract subjects, slim black or white frames keep the focus on the painting. Browse all frame styles in our designer.

Step 4. Add a Mat (Optional)

A mat border adds a gallery-quality finishing touch and creates visual breathing room around the painting. For paint by numbers, a single white or off-white mat in 2 to 2.5 inch width is the most common choice.

Protecting Your Paint by Number

Standard framer's grade acrylic glazing keeps your painting clean and free of dust. Non-glare acrylic is recommended if your frame will hang in a room with overhead lighting or windows, as it eliminates reflections that can obscure the painted surface. For textured canvas paintings where you want to see the brushwork, you can also order with no glazing and backing only.

Common Questions

Do I need to varnish my paint by number before framing?

Varnishing is optional but recommended. A clear matte or satin varnish evens out the sheen across the painting (some colors dry glossier than others) and adds a protective layer. Apply 1 to 2 thin coats and let each dry fully before framing.

Can I frame a paint by number that is still on the roll?

Yes. Order a frame with backing board. When it arrives, use acid-free spray adhesive to mount the canvas flat against the foam core backing, then assemble the frame. Alternatively, stretch the canvas onto wooden stretcher bars (available at art supply stores) before framing.

What if my canvas is slightly warped or buckled?

Place the canvas face-down on a clean surface and lightly mist the back with water. Lay a flat board on top and weight it down for 24 hours. The canvas should flatten. Then mount or stretch it before framing.

Should I use glass or acrylic?

We use acrylic exclusively. It is lighter and shatter-resistant compared to glass. Acrylic is the professional standard for picture framing.

What is the best paint by number frame for a finished canvas?

The best paint by number frame for a finished canvas is a custom paint by numbers frame sized to the painted area. It uses thick framer's grade acrylic and acid-free matting. A 16x20 paint by number frame fits the most popular kit size. An 11x14 paint by number frame fits the standard small kit. A 24x36 paint by number frame fits the largest statement-size canvas.

What size frame for paint by number kits, stretched vs. rolled?

Order a frame for paint by number sized to the painted area of your canvas, not the unpainted border. For a rolled or unstretched canvas, mount the painting flat to the included foam core backing inside the paint by numbers frame. For a pre-stretched canvas on wooden bars, choose a paint by number frame with a deeper rabbet that fits the 0.75-inch stretcher bar thickness.
