About Natural Wood Frames
Natural wood frames keep the wood honest. Profiles use unstained or lightly oiled maple, oak, ash, and pine that show the grain pattern and original color of the timber. Finishes run from raw and matte to subtly waxed, and widths sit between three quarters of an inch and two inches. The result reads warm, organic, and Scandinavian rather than rustic or distressed.
These frames are at home in modern farmhouses, Scandinavian apartments, nurseries, and any interior with natural light, plants, and natural-fiber textiles. They pair beautifully with botanical prints, nature photography, line drawings, and children's artwork. Every natural wood frame is built to order in our New Jersey workshop with optional acid-free mats and non-glare acrylic.
Natural Wood Frame Questions
Is natural wood the same as rustic?
No. Natural wood frames are clean, unstained profiles that show real wood grain in a contemporary way. Rustic frames are intentionally distressed, weathered, or whitewashed to look reclaimed. Natural wood reads as Scandinavian or organic modern; rustic reads as farmhouse or cabin.
Will the color of a natural wood frame change over time?
Lightly oiled wood will darken and warm slightly over the first year of exposure to light, then stabilize. Unstained maple stays nearly white. Oak deepens noticeably toward honey tones. These shifts are subtle and part of the appeal of working with real wood.
What mat color works with a natural wood frame?
Off-white, cream, and warm linen mats blend with most natural wood tones. Black mats create dramatic contrast and work well for graphic prints and photography. Avoid cool gray mats, which can fight the warm undertones in the wood.
Are natural wood frames eco-friendly?
The frame moldings are sourced from sustainably managed forests where possible, and the unstained finishes use low-VOC oils and waxes. The construction is solid wood rather than MDF or composite, which means the frame is repairable and long-lived.
