How the Interlocking Design Works
Each bar is milled with a 45-degree beveled edge along its full length. The wall bar mounts with the bevel facing upward and away from the wall. The frame bar mounts on the back of the frame with the bevel facing downward and toward the wall. When you hang the frame, the two bevels interlock like mating wedges, pulling the frame tight against the wall surface. This geometry distributes the load across the entire bar length rather than concentrating it at two or three screw points, which is why cleats handle far more weight than conventional hangers.
The wall bar attaches with heavy-gauge screws (included) driven into wall studs. A built-in bubble level on the wall bar simplifies alignment. The frame bar attaches to the rear of the frame with wood screws seated into the moulding. Once both bars are mounted, lift the frame and lower it onto the wall bar until the bevels engage. Heavy-duty holding capacity assumes installation into wood studs; for drywall-only mounting, use toggle bolts (not included) and expect a considerably reduced load rating.

When to Use French Cleats
French cleats are recommended for frames wider than 30 inches, frames with glass glazing (which adds significant weight), multi-opening mat configurations with heavy glass and multiple mat layers, shadow boxes with dense contents, and any heavy frame with substantial assembled weight.
They are also the standard hanging method for galleries, lobbies, and commercial spaces where frames must remain level despite vibration from foot traffic, HVAC systems, or adjacent doors.
