Streak-Free Cleaner for Acrylic Glazing
Plexiglass and acrylic are softer than glass and susceptible to micro-abrasion from paper towels, dry cloths, and chemical solvents. Ammonia, alcohol, and acetone (common ingredients in household glass cleaners) can cause crazing, a network of fine surface cracks that progressively cloud the panel. NOVUS No. 1 uses a water-based, pH-neutral formula free of ammonia and alcohol that cleans without softening or degrading the surface. The anti-static additive neutralizes the electrostatic charge that plexiglass naturally builds, reducing dust re-accumulation for weeks after each application.
Spray the cleaner onto a soft lint-free microfiber cloth, not directly onto the plexiglass surface, to prevent liquid from seeping behind frame edges and contacting mat boards or artwork. Wipe in straight, overlapping strokes across the full width of the panel. Flip the cloth to a dry section and buff lightly to remove any remaining moisture. For heavily soiled panels, make two passes: the first to lift debris, the second to polish. Avoid circular wiping motions, which concentrate pressure and can leave swirl marks on softer acrylic grades.
How to clean plexiglass and acrylic (step by step)
- 1Spray cleaner onto a soft microfiber cloth (never directly on the acrylic)
- 2Wipe gently using long, sweeping strokes
- 3Polish with circular strokes using a clean section of the cloth
- 4Buff to a streak-free shine
What to Avoid
- Never use ammonia-based glass cleaners on acrylic
- Avoid paper towels. They can scratch
- Don't spray directly on the glazing surface
