Comic Book Frame FAQ
What size frame do I need for a comic book?
Comic book frame size depends on the era. Modern Age (1985-present) is 6.625 by 10.1875 inches, Silver Age (1956-1970) and Bronze Age (1970-1985) are 7.125 by 10.25 inches, Golden Age (1938-1956) is 7.75 by 10.5 inches, and CGC, PGX, or CBCS graded slabs are 8.25 by 13 inches. Our designer cuts the mat opening to fit each era, and all sizes accept standard bags and boards.
What's the difference between a comic book frame and a comic book display case?
Same construction, different language. Every comic book frame we build is a true display case: shadow box depth so the cover never touches the acrylic, a nesting foam board so the comic slides in with no adhesive, archival backing, and framer's grade acrylic across the front. The result works as a comic book wall display, a desk display case, or a graded slab holder.
Will the frame hold CGC, PGX, or CBCS graded slabs?
Yes. Pick the Graded Slab era in the designer and the mat opening is cut to 8.25 by 13 inches, which fits standard CGC, PGX, and CBCS slabs. Shadow box depth accommodates the full thickness of the slab without pressure on the case.
Can I mount the comic book frame on a wall?
Yes. Every comic book frame ships with wall-mount hardware on the back, so it works as a comic book wall mount or wall display straight out of the box. Multi-comic layouts (rows, columns, and grids of up to 6 books) are popular for wall installations.
Will framing damage my comic?
No. Your comic slides into a cutout nest in the foam board. No adhesive, no tape, no pressure on the cover or pages. The shadow box depth keeps the comic from touching the acrylic, and all four edges are held in place by archival mat and backing. Raw books and graded slabs can both be removed cleanly if you ever want to swap them out.
What size are comic book frames for a Modern Age comic?
Most Modern Age comic book frames are about 11 by 14 inches on the outside. The mat opening is cut to fit the 6.625 by 10.1875 inch cover. A three-book Modern Age horizontal row fits in about a 24 by 14 inch frame with 2-inch mat borders.
Can I build a comic book wall display with multiple issues in one frame?
The same comic book display case construction supports 2 to 6-book layouts in rows, columns, or grids. A 6-comic grid wall display is about 24 by 28 inches. Each Modern Age opening is cut to 6.625 by 10.1875 inches. Shadow box depth fits raw books or CGC, PGX, and CBCS graded slabs.
