Foam board is one of the most common backing and mounting materials in picture framing. It is lightweight, rigid, easy to cut, and available in several types and thicknesses. But not all foam board is created equal, and using the wrong type can damage artwork over time or fail to provide adequate support. How Foam Board Is Used in Picture Framing
Foam board, also called foam core, is a rigid sheet material made of a polystyrene foam center laminated between two outer paper or plastic facings. The foam core provides lightweight rigidity while the facings give the board a smooth, printable surface. Standard foam board uses a white expanded polystyrene core with white clay-coated paper facings. It was originally developed for the sign and display industry but has become a staple in picture framing for backing, mounting, and filling depth in shadow box frames. Foam board is available from virtually every framing supply company and most art supply stores, in full sheets measuring 32 x 40 inches or 48 x 96 inches, as well as pre-cut smaller panels.
Types of Foam Board
White foam board with white paper facings is the standard and most affordable option. Black foam board uses a black polystyrene core with black paper facings and is used when the edge or back of the board will be visible, such as in shadow box frames or float-mounted displays. Self-adhesive foam board has a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer on one face protected by a peel-off liner, allowing artwork to be mounted by simply pressing it onto the surface. This is convenient but not reversible, making it unsuitable for valuable artwork. Acid-free foam board replaces the standard paper facings with acid-free, buffered paper and uses an inert polystyrene core. This is the type required for conservation framing where the board contacts or sits near the artwork.
Thickness Options and Structural Performance
Foam board comes in three standard thicknesses: 3/16 inch (approximately 5 mm), 1/4 inch (6 mm), and 1/2 inch (12 mm). The 3/16-inch thickness is the most common in picture framing and provides adequate rigidity for frames up to about 20 x 24 inches. It fits easily into standard frame rabbets, which are typically 3/8 to 1/2 inch deep. The 1/4-inch board offers slightly more rigidity and is a better choice for frames larger than 20 x 24 inches where a thinner board might flex. The 1/2-inch foam board is primarily used as a filler or spacer in shadow box frames to build up depth behind a mat or between display layers. It is too thick for most standard frame rabbets.
Foam Board vs Other Backing Materials
Foam board competes with several other backing materials. Corrugated cardboard is cheaper but less rigid and can introduce acids near the artwork. Mat board offcuts can serve as backing but are heavier and thinner. Acid-free corrugated board offers good rigidity and conservation properties but is thicker and heavier than foam board. Hardboard (Masonite) is extremely rigid and durable but heavy and difficult to cut without power tools. For most standard framing projects, foam board strikes the best balance of weight, rigidity, cost, and ease of handling. A single sheet of 3/16-inch foam board weighs roughly 8 ounces at 16 x 20 inches, compared to nearly 2 pounds for the same size in hardboard.
When to Use Acid-Free Foam Board
Standard foam board uses clay-coated paper facings that contain acids and lignin. Over years of contact, these acids can migrate into the artwork and cause yellowing or staining, similar to the damage caused by non-acid-free mat board. If the foam board serves only as a rear backing and is separated from the artwork by an acid-free mounting board, standard foam board is acceptable because there is no direct contact. If the foam board will touch the artwork directly, as in a simple backing-only frame without a separate mounting board, use acid-free foam board. For any project that meets conservation framing standards, every material in the frame package including the backing board should be acid-free.
Cutting and Handling Tips
Cut foam board with a sharp utility knife or mat knife, replacing the blade frequently. A dull blade compresses the foam rather than slicing it, producing a rough, angled edge. Use a metal straightedge as a guide and cut on a self-healing cutting mat to protect your work surface. Make the cut in two passes rather than one: the first pass scores through the top facing and into the foam, and the second pass completes the cut through the bottom facing. This two-pass technique produces a cleaner edge than forcing the blade through in a single stroke. Store foam board flat in a dry environment. Humidity can cause the paper facings to expand at different rates from the foam core, leading to warping. If a sheet has warped slightly, placing it under flat weight for 24 hours in a dry room usually corrects it.
